English Idioms 01

Language is very interesting, I especially love how we can use a sentences to represent something that doesn't have anything to do with the word itself, like an idiom.
What is idiom? Wiki says that:
An idiom (Latin: idioma, "special property", f. Greek: ἰδίωμα – idiōma, "special feature, special phrasing", f. Greek: ἴδιος – idios, "one’s own") is a combination of words that have a figurative meaning owing to its common usage. An idiom's figurative meaning is separate from the literal meaning. There are thousands of idioms and they occur frequently in all languages. There are estimated to be at least twenty-five thousand idiomatic expressions in the English language.
Just like how I love chéngyǔ 成语 in Mandarin language, I also love idiom in English language.

Let's see some English idioms, their definition, and how to use it in our daily life..

Sing Along [I Believe by Fàn Yì Chén 范逸臣]

Sometimes even though we don't understand the meaning of the song, they still touch our heart. The first time I hear this song, I don't understand the meaning, but this mellow song somehow makes me feel a bit sad, but it still a good song nonetheless.
This song is actually the Chinese version from Korean film, My Sassy Girl.

Myth or Fact [Friday the 13th]

Last night I get to sleep late because of reading. I think I'm going to sleep at one past thirty in the morning. I'm used to sleep in the dark, so I turn off my lamp and go to my bed. When I'm looking at my bed, I see a shape of something, because it's dark, I can't be sure if my eyes are fooling me or there's something in my bed, or whatever. On top of that the book I read before going to sleep is a bit psychology-horror, so imagine my feeling when I see that lumpy dark shape in my bed.. *shiver*
So I just close my eyes, get up to my bed and use a blanket to cover my body up to my neck. In my minds eye I keep seeing scary thing looking down at me from beside my bed, and I'm trying my best to fall asleep. It's hard with this scary thought running around my head, and somehow it sprang to my head that today is Friday the 13th! Not that I believe superstition thing, and Friday the 13th is available at every month that start with Sunday. But scary thing is scary, and our mind is the scariest place to be when we think of scary things. I don't make any sense am I? Well, you know how it is, I'm sure.. :D

Chinese Can Be Fun [Beautiful Chinese Character 01]

Have I mention before that Chinese people are brilliant? They really are, where else can you find such a beautiful writing character (mighty difficult do learn though) that can also be used to draw something that represent that very character? Japan maybe, but Japanese character is originated from China, so I rest my case. I'm sure I already mentioned to you that I'm not a big fan of Chinese language, seriously, why do they talk like they're mad or something? Can't their language be cuter like Japanese are? And the character, oh my Goddess, there's a lot of it, with different meaning and different way to read, and different way to use! I give up! Thankfully I still have my Pleco dictionary, my lifesaver in case of Chinese character.
Anyway, I want to share with you something I love about Chinese language, their beautiful Chinese character. So, the way the Chinese people writing now has changed from how it used to be. In fact, their writing used to be a drawing, that evolve into Chinese character. Here some example:
Do you notice the resemblance of the modern Chinese character with their respective drawing? Very cool isn't it?

Making Pizza Is Easy!

Whew, it's been a long week, time sure does flies when we wished it last doesn't it?
Anyway my mom been nagging me to make a pizza, because recently she bought a package of frozen pizza crust. And let me tell you, even though it's very convenient to use a ready-made pizza crust, it's doesn't look appetizing (for me) and making your own dough is not hard anyway, so why don't we just make our own pizza dough??

Let's get on to the recipe!

Broccoli Chicken Casserole

I need more time to sleep! I wish the night is just a little bit longer, so I can sleep longer.. How much sleep do you think we need? According to National Sleep Foundation, (gosh, I just found out that someone is dedicating their time to such a thing, not that I consider sleep is not important, but, wow..)  sleep needs vary across ages and impacted by lifestyle and health. Basically the older we get, the less time we need to sleep, but we need at least 7 hours of sleep. I myself would be happy enough if I can get at least 8 hours of sleep, better if I can get 9 hours of sleep. The problem is, since I spend the day working, I spend the night reading, or playing. The mistake I repeatedly do, again and again is, start reading a book when I'm getting ready for sleep, and being a bookworm that I am, I just can't put down the book long enough to get some sleep! I know, I know this is my own fault, but even when I'm reminding myself not to do it again, I keep repeating my mistake again and again. *sigh* If only the night is longer..

Well, one of the best way to get some decent sleep, is to eat nice food. I don't know if it's the same for everyone, but for me good food makes me sleepy, especially comfort food like this amazingly delicious Broccoli Chicken Casserole! Yum~

Here is how you make it:

Sing Along [Māmā 妈妈 by Wú Jiàn Háo 吴建豪 / Vanness Wu]

Good song is pleasant to hear, great song can move our heart. This song is one of my most favorite Mandarin Song, Mama by Vanness Wu. I cried when I first hear (and understand the meaning) this song. This song has touched my heart, and it remains as one of the best song I've ever had the pleasure to hear.
Here is the lyric and the free translation of this song..
